The ‘Academy by the Sea’ is a marine education programme for secondary school students fully funded by Save Our Seas Foundation and organized by the Marine Conservation Society Seychelles.
In June/July 2012, students from all the secondary schools on Mahe, Praslin and La Digue were invited to take part in a competition to gain one of the 24 Save Our Seas Foundation fully funded scholarship places to the ‘Academy by the Sea’ programme. The competition was to write an essay or design a poster on the theme ‘Conserving Seychelles Marine Life’. There were two age categories (S1-S3 and S4-S5) for the competition, which coincided with the two age groups for which the programme would be taught.
We received entries to the competition from public and private schools on Mahe and Praslin. 24 students were selected for the scholarships on the merit of the competition entries. All students were awarded prizes and certificates in a ceremony which was held at the National Library (http://www.nation.sc/imprimer.php?art=28552).
The two two-week programmes ran between 13th August – 7th September 2012. During the programme students learnt about the different coastal habitats in the Seychelles, the animals that live within them and the threats that the habitats and animals are facing (http://www.nation.sc/index.php?art=28777).
From the students who attended the first programme, the 16 most deserving students have been chosen to participate on the programme at D’Arros. The students have been selected based on their performance (enthusiasm, willingness to participate, interest etc) at the first academy and their participation in marine activities which have occurred since the academy.
